The Beverage People
I head on down to the local brewing supply store called The Beverage People to get information and to purchase a starter kit. The store is a mom and pop outfit and they are very knowledgeable and friendly people. As a matter of fact, Byron one of the owners has written several books one of which comes with his starter kits. The store is located in a warehouse type of setting and is filled with many items for beer brewing, wine making, mead making and probably many other things that require fermentation. After asking some questions and being the kind of person that likes to go all out I decided to purchase the super brewer kit. This kit comes with everything, and probably some stuff you won't use, that a beginner needs. I also decide to buy a couple cases of 22oz bottles, caps and my first pre-packaged recipe kit; it is a recipe for British pale ale. Byron informed me that it would be a good idea to read his book cover to cover before brewing to give myself a basic understanding of what I was about to under take. When I got home and looked at everything I had purchase I realized what a good idea that was.
I throw all this stuff in my car and head for home. At home I begin to unpack all this stuff and I found myself scratching my head not only as to what some of this stuff was, but also what it was used for.
Let’s see there was:
*1 32qt. stainless steel pot
*1 7gl. glass jug
*1 5gl. glass jug
*1 6.5gl. plastic bucket
*1 giant wooden spoon
*1 hydrometer
*1 large test tube
*1 soft plastic tube
*2 rigid plastic tubes one with a bend in it about 2 inches from the top, the second a black cap on the end with some sort of valve connected to that
*1 bottle capper
*2 scrub brushes on wire handles one with a bend in it.
*1 copper coil tubing with connectors on both ends one male one female.
*1 4oz bottle of Iodophor sanitizer
*1 brewing quality beers book.
*3 rubber stoppers with holes in the middle 2 of equal size and one slightly smaller
*2 plastic air lock valves that stems fit into the holes in the robber stoppers
I believe that’s it, while I may be able to figure out what all these things are used for it is probably a good idea to read the book first. That shouldn’t take to long looks like pretty easy reading.
